About us
The Crossmore Institute is an educational institution for the curious. It believes in a philosophy of inverted, random pedagogy that is free of hierarchies and goals. There are no students or alumni. Members of the Crossmore community participate as regents, professors, graduate assistants, and janitorial staff when needed.
Values and Mission
The Crossmore Institute seeks to foster academic experiences that highlight:
The beauty and intrigue of the natural environment,
The beauty and intrigue of the unnatural environment, too,
The unseen and valuable knowledge of the world we each possess,
The utter uselessness of such knowledge, which we mean in the best possible sense,
The foundational and transcendental experience of being a part of a community,
The seeming impossibility of just even getting along with these actual people in our community.
The Crossmore Institute does not seek to highlight or even value the following things:
Western visual art between the Renaissance and Impressionism,
Television shows that people tell us we “must” watch,
Splitting the check evenly when we intentionally chose the least expensive option in order to save money,
People who say, “You do you,” which is a euphemistic way to tell someone they are weird and beyond understanding and love,
Neurobiological reductionism when explaining human experience,
Feelings of shame that arise during interactions with family members.
